There are well over a hundred tourist, enthusiast and museum railways operating in Great Britain, ranging from miniature railways running a few hundred yards along the seafront to former main line railways extending for many miles. The lists on these pages may not be exhaustive. My aim has been to include all the venues offering train rides to the general public on a regular basis, as well as a selection of the more interesting new projects. Even so, I will inevitably have overlooked a few. If you know of any other railways that deserve a mention here, please Email me.
Most of these railways operate at weekends and public holidays in the summer. Many run “Santa’s Specials” for children in the run up to Christmas. Some operate all year round; a few, particularly those that provide a rural access service in addition to their tourist role, operate during the week. Many, but not all, regularly operate steam trains (please note that even those who usually do so, sometimes operate diesel trains). In all cases, it is advisable to enquire before making a long journey to visit any of the railways.
