| Agate, Chalcedony, Jasper, Onyx |
More or less interchangeable names for a family of rocks and minerals
composed of Microcrystalline Quartz, that is to say Silica that forms
amorphous, opaque masses as contrasted with the large, clear crystals
usually associated with the Quartz family. They occur in many colours
and patternings. Chalcedony usually refers to paler, more translucent
varieties. Onyx is often, but not always, banded. |
Used for balancing the forces of Yin and Yang within the human bodies.
Also balances the physical against the emotional. Awakens latent talents,
promotes spiritual connectedness, mental stability and decision making.
Used for aura cleansing and the elimination of negativity. |
| Amethyst |
A clear, purple variety of Quartz. |
Promotes spirituality, contentment, stability, strength and peace.
Use to balance and raise the psychic energies to a higher plane.
An excellent stone for meditation, producing a calm and peaceful
state and helping to maintain it. Opens and activates the Sahasrara
Chakra. Protects against psychic attack. Provides the "sense" of
common sense. Gives flexibility in decision making and prosperity
in business. Aids the assimilation of new ideas. Used to treat
hearing disorders. Strengthens the skeleton and assists good
posture. Vitalizes and cleanses the autonomic nervous system and
the endocrine glands. Also helpful with disorders of the nervous
system generally, the digestion, heart, stomach, skin, and teeth. |
| Ametrine |
A combination of Amethyst and Citrine. It can sometimes resemble
Blue John. |
Its properties are a combination of those of Amethyst and Citrine. |
| Bloodstone |
A dark green Chalcedony, often with red flecks. |
Enables contact with the ancestral spirits. Dispels bewilderment and
obscurity of thought. Used for treating disorders of the blood, kidneys,
intestines, liver and circulation. Promotes the elimination of toxins.
Has been used effectively in some cases of leukaemia. |
| Calcite |
May be found as crystals or as rough masses. It is usually translucent,
and occurs in a wide variety of colours. Two common ones, which are also
particularly useful ones, are pale green and orange. |
All forms of Calcite can be used to promote energy distribution through
the physical and subtle bodies. Green Calcite can help to remove harmful
influences, either psychic or resulting from infection. Orange Calcite
(or Teddite) is an excellent promoter of clarity
of rational thought. |
| Cairngorm |
Named after the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland, the spelling
"Carnigorm", which is sometimes seen, is an error. A golden brown form of
Quartz, generally lighter and clearer than the otherwise similar Smokey
Quartz. In a few pieces of jewellery, especially some older ones, it has
been misidentified as a Brown Topaz. |
The properties of Cairngorm are very similar to those of Smokey Quartz,
but it may also be expected to take on some of the properties of Citrine. |
| Carnelian |
An orange-red, often translucent, form of Chalcedony. |
Promotes an inquiring mind, while dispelling apathy. Provides
protection from psychic attack. Assists in the release of earthbound
spirits. Used to treat neuralgia, gallstones, kidney stones, hayfever,
colds and disorders of the spleen and pancreas. |
| Citrine |
A clear, pale yellow variety of Quartz. |
Used for aura cleansing and alignment. For disorders of digestion,
the blood, thyroid and thymus. |
| Fluorite |
Also known as Fluorspar, but
the spelling "Flourite", although seen remarkably often, is an error.
Occurs in a variety of colours, commonly white or clear, pale green and
pale mauve. Many specimens show attractive bands of all three colours. |
Develops the perfection of health, the intellect and emotional
well-being. Used in the treatment of common viral infections: colds,
flu, coldsores and the like. |
| Garnet |
The name of a family of minerals and gemstones formed from
aluminosilicates of iron and magnesium. The most popular Garnets are
the clear, bright red variety. |
A stone of health, which extracts negative energies from the Chakras.
Promotes commitment to purpose and to self, with correctness of purpose
and direction, leading to success. Enables connectivity to other worlds.
Used in the treatment of disorders of the spinal column, bones, heart,
lungs and blood. |
| Hematite |
Also spelled Haematite. A very heavy rock composed of oxide of iron,
occurring in irregular masses and having a grey, metallic appearance. |
Hematite radiates soft, loving energies, providing a gentle grounding
force and relieving stress and unhappiness. Used in the treatment of
cramps, anaemia, insomnia and nervous disorders. Can also promote the
healing of fractures. |
| Leaverite |
This is a joke. There is no such material. It is actually an old miners'
slang term for any worthless rock - as in the expression "leave 'er right
there", in other words it is not worth the trouble of digging it up. In
spite of this, Leaverite does have its uses! |
Promotes discrimination, discernment and tolerance. Diminishes prejudice
and allows an accurate assessment of self-worth. |
| Lapis Lazuli |
True Lapis Lazuli consists of dark blue Lazurite (Sodium Aluminium
Sulphosilicate) with tiny flecks of golden Pyrite. |
Lapis Lazuli is said to have existed "since time was born". This is,
of course, a metaphor indicating that it has been known to man since the
most ancient of times; nevertheless it can be used for linking in to
previous ages, even before the creation of the Earth. It can thus be used
to access the hidden ancient mysteries and secret planetary knowledge.
It also gives one the wisdom to handle these contacts. It opens the Third
Eye and gives purity and clarity on the emotional, mental and physical
planes. Gives balance and connectedness, and provides a guide and a counsel
during meditative states. Provides protection from danger and from psychic
attacks. Helps to build the aura. Used to treat disorders of the throat,
thymus, bone, bone marrow and the immune system. |
| Malachite |
Deep green stone, often with darker bandings, composed of copper
carbonate hydroxide. An especially attractive stone when polished. |
Provides insight into the nature of basic disorders of body, mind and
spirit, so opening up possible avenues of treatment. It is an equalizing
and balancing stone, and can also be used to help remove obstacles to one's
progress. It is used to facilitate journeys, and provides relief from
vertigo as well as arthritis and rheumatism. |
| Moonstone |
A variety of Orthoclase Feldspar (potassium aluminium silicate), usually
a translucent, milky stone, often with a moon-like internal light. |
The traveller's stone, providing protection against all the perils
of travel. Promotes good fortune, and calmness with awareness. Arouses
tender feelings. Used to treat degenerative conditions such as flaking
skin, hair loss, weakening of the eyes, and diminished muscular action. |
| Obsidian |
A type of glass, of volcanic origin, usually black, but can occur in
other colours: most notably dark brownish red (Mahogany Obsidian) and black
with white or grey flecks (Snowflake Obsidian). |
Used for protection, grounding, and to dispel negativity. It can
transform disharmonious thoughts and intents into those of love. It promotes one's
natural healing abilities, which may be used to benefit oneself or others.
Black Obsidian promotes creativity. Mahogany Obsidian promotes growth and
gives strength in time of need. It removes blockages, opens channels of
opportunity and releases tensions. Snowflake Obsidian gives purity and
balance. It enables one to take proper advantages of the benefits to be
gained be the occasional isolation of oneself from the everyday world.
It gives serenity of outlook, clarity of vision, and enables one to
recognize the irrelevant. |
| Pyrite |
Also known as Pyrites, Iron Pyrites or Fool's Gold. An oxide of iron,
it has a golden coloured, metallic appearance. It forms in rough clusters
or distinct cubic crystals. Sometimes found as tiny inclusions in other
rocks, when it is most easily mistaken for gold. |
A defensive and protective stone, it stimulates the intellect and the
memory, and gives one the ability to see through sham facades. Used in
the treatment of lung disorders, fevers and inflammation |
| Quartz |
Also known as Rock Crystal. A form of silica, which is most familiar
in the form of sand, Quartz is distinguished by having relatively large,
distinct, transparent crystals. |
Facilitates meditation and aids focus. Stimulates
the alpha brain wave rhythm. Stimulates all the energies and alleviates
pain, reducing swelling and fevers. Use with the point upwards to draw
the bodies to a higher state of spirituality; with the point downwards
if more earthing is needed. |
| Rose Quartz |
Although rarely forming perfect crystals, and usually translucent
rather than transparent, the beautiful pale pink colour nevertheless
makes this a very attractive stone. |
Generates strong, powerful loving energies. Opens the Anahata Chakra.
Cleanses the body and spirit. Clears the skin, reduces pain. |
| Selenite |
A form of Gypsum, hydrated calcium sulphate. Usually white or
colourless, often with a prominent striated crystal structure. |
Gives access to past and future lives, insofar as such access is
compatible with one's present incarnation. Tends to decrease reticence.
Promotes awareness, reflection, flexibility, re-connection to one's
spiritual side, and material success. Enables one to access the interior
of the body in order to determine the root causes of bodily disorders.
Used to treat disorders of the spine, teeth (including problems caused
by toxic fillings), reduces spots, tumours and growths. Has been used
in some cases of epilepsy, and skeletal deformity. |
| Smokey Quartz |
Light greyish brown, through dark brown, to almost black form of Quartz;
often appears as though it has been "smoked". |
Gives protection, and promotes personal pride, joy of living,
discrimination, cooperation and practicality in money matters. Used to
treat kidney and liver disorders, and problems with the hands and feet. |
| Tiger Eye, Tiger's Eye |
A form of Crocidolite, sodium iron silicate. Tiger Eye is usually red
or golden, while a blue variety is sometimes known as "Hawk's Eye". A
striated or banded material, with a strong tendency to reflect light
internally giving a glow like a cat's eye. |
Gives grounding with clarity and the ability to resolve dilemmas.
Dispels apathy and arouses enthusiasm, while still able to "go with the
flow", and to attend to the needs of others. It is soothing and calming,
and eases congestive disorders of the bowels, throat, eyes and
reproductive system. |
