How to Get Around Derbyshire

and neighbouring counties

Directions to all the Well Dressings are given on the detail pages for each of the venues - just click on the link in the calendar. Many villages produce a brochure (obtainable locally), which often has a map. These are almost always worth buying, but in a few instances (which I have noted on the detail pages) they can be quite indispensable.

If you have a car, you will of course be tempted to use it; but if you are not so fortunate, or if you would like to do your bit to help the environment, you might want to consider public transport.

Derbyshire has an excellent network of bus services serving most of the villages on the calendar, even on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Some villages are also accessible by rail, and rail is a good way of getting from one end of the county to the other.

Information regarding all rail services can be obtained from the National Rail website.

On-line bus timetables for Derbyshire can be found in the Derbyshire Journey Planner. However, when travelling around, you may find it convenient to have with you the handy and comprehensive transport maps and timetable books for the county. These are available from bus enquiry offices and tourist information centres in the area, or by post from the Derbyshire County Council Public Transport Unit.

A special rover ticket, the Derbyshire Wayfarer, is available which gives unlimited travel on virtually all bus and train services in the county during the course of a day. It also allows travel to and from Sheffield, Burton-upon-Trent, Macclesfield, Leek and Uttoxeter; inexpensive add-ons cover Beeston and Nottingham. It is obtainable from the same outlets as the timetables, on board most buses except some town services, and at rail stations.

Information regarding services in South Yorkshire (Dore and Harthill) can be obtained from SYPTE, which has comprehensive on-line timetables.

Information regarding services in Nottinghamshire (Headon) can be obtained from TravelWise Nottingham, which has comprehensive on-line timetables.

Services in Staffordshire (Brown Edge, Endon, Longnor, Lichfield, Marchington, Newborough) and Cheshire (Sutton Lane Ends) and even Greater Manchester (Chadkirk and Gee Cross), which used to have an excellent timetable service of its own, are now found through the traveline planning engine, which I find more difficult to use than the ukbus engine used by other authorities. However, there are alternatives. The Derbyshire Journey Planner includes all services to Longnor. It includes services to Sutton Lane Ends from Macclesfield, and to Macclesfield from Derbyshire and Stockport; a few connecting services to Macclesfield from the Manchester area are omitted. Services from Derbyshire to Leek are included, from where services to Endon and Brown Edge can be found on the Stoke-on-Trent Journey Planner site. The latter site can also be used for journeys from Stoke to these two villages.
