CAR: there is a large car park next to the Swallow House
Lane Well, from where most of the other dressings can be comfortably
reached on foot. The nearest point to Hill Houses that can be
reached by car is Bowden Bridge car park on Kinder Road, but that
car park is often full.
WELL DRESSINGS: in 2008 there
were nine, 3 of which were new that year:
- at the restored well on Swallow House Lane
- on Bank Street, a short distance above its junction with
Market Street
- 4 at the Cenotaph, next to the river bridge near the entrance
to the Royal Hotel
- at Watery Hey, on a footpath joining the end of Spring Vale Road
with Valley Road about 300m from the village centre
- at St John's Methodist Church on New Mills Road (A6015)
- at Hill Houses, off Kinder Road about 1km east of the village.
This dressing can be reached on foot from Bowden Bridge Car Park
either by a footpath (about 0.5 km including a very steep section)
or by road and track (about 2.5 km). Good footwear is strongly
recommended for either route. From the car park take the road
directly ahead, leading towards Kinder Reservoir. After about 100m
a path leads of to the right, immediately before a house on the
road. This is signed as a public footpath but has no other sign.
If following the footpath, continue along it with the stream on your
right until you come to a small arched bridge with no parapet. Cross
the bridge and go through the gate on your left up the steep slope
to Hill Houses at the top. If proceeding by road, continue along
the paved road as far as the gateway to Kinder Reservoir, then turn
right. After about 200m, turn right again (signposted to Hill House).
Continue to follow the track and go through the gate at the end.
WELLS IN THE MAKING: the dressings are made during the
preceding in various venues in the village. Contact Denise Hall
01663 745933 for further details.
WALKING TOUR: a walking tour (about hour) of all the
dressings can be arranged on request. Contact Denise Hall
01663 745933 for details.
