Provincia Britannia, or simply Britannia, was the name given by the Roman Empire to that part of the island of Great Britain under Roman rule. At its greatest extent it reached as far as the Antonine Wall between the estuaries of the Forth and Clyde in present day Scotland, but for most of the period the northern limit was Hadrian’s Wall, stretching across the country near to the present day cities of Carlisle and Newcastle.

At the eastern end of the wall, a fortified settlement known as Segedunum was built. Substantial remains of the settlement exist today and may be visited by the general public. A later community that grew up in the area took its name from the wall, to become Wallsend.

In the early 21st century, Wallsend station of the Tyne & Wear Metro added signage in Latin, not only for the station name but for general signage, thus making it possibly the only bilingual English and Latin station in the world.

In saeculum XXVIII A.U.C., in stationem Wallsend de Tyne & Wear Metro alia signa Latina fecit applicare, sic faciens et potest tantum in Latina Anglicaque bilinguis statione in mundo.
