The nearest railhead to Bhutan: Hasimara station in Paschimbanga, India

There have never been any railways in this isolated mountain Kingdom. The nearest railhead is currently at Hasimara in India, about 15km from the border with Bhutan and 170km from the Bhutanese capital, Thimpu. Its importance as a railhead is likely to decline with the opening of new international lines.

In 2025, construction was authorised of two new international rail lines, connecting with the Indian national network: Kokrajhar (India) to Gelephu Mindfulness City, about 69km (of which 2.4km will be in Bhutan), and Banarhat (India) to Samtse, about 20km (of which 2.1km will be in Bhutan). The lines will be built by Indian railways to 1675mm gauge.
