The nearest railhead to Bhutan: Hasimara station in Paschimbanga, India

There have never been any railways in this isolated mountain Kingdom. The nearest railhead is at Hasimara in India, about 15km from the border with Bhutan and 170km from the Bhutanese capital, Thimpu.

In 2009, Bhutan approved the construction of a 17.5km branch from the railway at Hasimara to a new town at Toribari, near Pasakha in Bhutan. The Toribari installation would include an extensive inland port facility. Following a number of delays, construction is expected to begin in 2023.
