The former Portuguese territory of Macau is now a Special Administrative Region of China.
An urban transit system opened in 2019, described as a light rail metro but actually using rubber tyred people mover technology. The initial 9km section connects the Taipa Ferry Terminal with Oceano, serving residential and tourist areas along the route. A 2km branch runs from the Lotus Checkpoint to Hengqin Island, administratively part of mainland China, where it connects with the Zhuhai Airport Intercity Railway of China Railway. A line is planned from Taipa Ferry Terminal, running under the river estuary and continuing to Portas do Cerco on the Macau peninsula.
There are no other railways in Macau.
