The first railway in what was then Ceylon opened in 1861 between Colombo and Ambepussa, a distance of 34½ miles (54 km), and was the first section of a line to Kandy. It was built to a gauge of 5ft 6in (1675mm), which had been adopted as standard for the majority of main line railways on the Indian mainland, and was used for subsequent expansion on the island.
The Sri Lankan railway network today serves most major population centres on the island.
