The port of Berbera in Somaliland

Somaliland is a self declared state in the north west of Somalia, the location of the former colony of British Somaliland. It is generally recognized by the international community as an autonomous region of Somalia, although not sovereign.

There are no railways in Somaliland. However, the Ethiopian government has taken a financial interest the port of Berbera, in return for implementing a new transport corridor connecting the port with Dire Dawa in Ethiopia. A railway is proposed as part of this corridor but initially it is being constructed as road only.
