The first and only railway in South Ossetia opened in 1940 between Gori and Tshkinvali in what was then the Georgian Republic of the Soviet Union. It was built to the Russian standard gauge of 1520mm. Just a few km of this 30km line lie within the territory of South Ossetia. The line was severed during the separatist conflict of 1991 and has not reopened.
