The first railway on the island of St Kitts (St Christopher) was a 2ft 6in (762mm) gauge line opened in 1912 to serve the sugar cane industry. Several further lines were added over the years, but by the 1990s the system was largely run down.
Then, in 2003, an 18 mile (29 km) section of the line on the east coast of the island, between Basseterre and La Valle, was reopened to provide a luxuriously appointed tourist passenger service. A circular tour of the island is offered, travelling outwards by train and returning by bus, or vice versa. Many of the journeys run in connection with visiting cruise ships.
