Government of Tonga Railway No.1
Government of Tonga Railway No.1, build by Caldwell Vale.

Tonga once had a railway, running from the central lagoon through the town of Nuku’alofa to the wharf. It was used for the transport of copra, and its route can be followed as the present day Railway Road.

No information has been found regarding the dates of operation of the railway, but it is known that the Caldwell Vale company of Australia supplied a small 4-wheel internal combustion powered locomotive, probably around 1914.

A section of rail from the former railway is in use as a footrail in a Nuku’alofa cafe.
