The Virgin Islands are a territory of the United States of America, distinct from the nearby British Virgin Islands. There are no railways in the British Virgin Islands.
The only railway in the Virgin Islands was the Creque Marine Railway. This was located on Hassel Island, a small island (until about 1865 a peninsula) just off the island of St Thomas, in Charlotte Amalie Bay. The line consisted of an inclined plane by means of which ships could be drawn up out of the sea on a cradle for the purpose of repairs. It was operational from the 1840s to the 1960s. The remains of the railway and its associated works, though much ravaged by time and weather, are considered important historical artifacts and can still be seen today; there are proposals for restoration work.
