Incline Railway at Gjógv
The Incline Railway at Gjógv

A 600m gauge railway was built at Gjógv on the island of Eysturoy to connect the village to the harbour. It was used to carry goods and even small boats, via a steep incline, up which wagons were hauled by winch and rope. It is still occasionally used today, even though transport to the village by road is now possible.

A NATO radar station was established in the 1960s on the mountain of Sornfelli on the island of Streymoy. A railway system with a tunnel was created to convey supplies to the station. The station closed in 2007, and with it the railway. In 2022, an agreement was reached to construct a new station. It is not known whether the railway will be reractivated.
