Abandoned Railway on Qoornoq
Abandoned Railway on Qoornoq

A number of small railways were constructed during the 1950s, either as part of fishing operations or exploratory mining operations. All were abandoned by the mid 1970s.

The railway depicted above is at Qoornoq, a deserted vilage on the island of Qoornup Qeqertarsua, about 40km north of Nuuk in the Nuup Kangerlua fjord. The 600mm gauge railway connected a fish drying facility with the harbour. According to ome account, it may have had a small diesel hydraulic locomotive, but the lightness of the rail construction and the type of wagons used suggests that this was unlikely. However, a number of the other railways in the territory did have locomotives.
